IELTS Speaking travel and holiday questions with model answers. Part 1, 2 & 3 responses about trips, destinations, and tourism with Band 7+ vocabulary.

Part 1 Questions: Travel

These questions are asked at the start of the speaking test. Keep your answers to 2-3 sentences.

  • Do you like travelling?
  • Where was the last place you visited?
  • Do you prefer travelling alone or with others?
  • What kind of places do you like to visit?
  • Do you think travel is educational?
  • Where would you most like to visit?

Part 2 Cue Card

Describe a trip you remember well. You should say: where you went, who you went with, what you did there, and explain why this trip was memorable.

Model Answer (Band 7+)

A trip that remains vivid in my memory is a week-long visit to Kyoto, Japan, which I took about eighteen months ago with my partner. It was our first trip to East Asia, and the experience exceeded every expectation I had.

We arrived in late November, which turned out to be perfect timing as the autumn foliage was at its peak. The city was awash with stunning shades of red, orange, and gold, creating a visual spectacle that photographs simply cannot capture adequately. We spent our days visiting temples, shrines, and gardens, each more beautiful than the last.

What struck me most was the extraordinary attention to detail in Japanese culture. At the ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn where we stayed for two nights, every aspect of the experience was meticulously considered, from the arrangement of the futon bedding to the multi-course kaiseki dinner where each dish was presented as a miniature work of art. The owner spoke limited English, but her warmth and hospitality transcended any language barrier.

We also visited the famous Fushimi Inari shrine with its thousands of vermillion torii gates winding up the mountainside. We went early in the morning to avoid crowds and found ourselves virtually alone on the upper trails, with nothing but birdsong and dappled sunlight filtering through the gates. It was one of the most serene experiences of my life.

This trip was memorable because it fundamentally shifted my perspective. I had read about Japanese culture extensively, but experiencing it firsthand, the harmony between tradition and modernity, the reverence for nature, the quiet courtesy of everyday interactions, was genuinely transformative.

Part 3 Discussion Questions

These are more abstract questions that require deeper analysis. Aim for 3-5 sentences per answer.

  • How has tourism changed your country?
  • What are the negative effects of tourism?
  • Do you think virtual travel could replace real travel?
  • Is it better to travel to many places briefly or spend a long time in one place?
