IELTS Academic Writing Task 1: Describing Visuals

In Academic Writing Task 1, you need to describe visual information presented in a graph, table, chart, or diagram. You should write at least 150 words and spend about 20 minutes on this task.

The goal is to summarise the main trends, features, or comparisons objectively, without giving your opinion.

Common Types of Visuals

You might encounter a single visual or sometimes a combination of two related visuals.

Recommended Structure

A clear structure is essential for a good score. Aim for 3-4 paragraphs:

  1. Introduction (1 sentence): Paraphrase the question. State what the visual(s) show, including the data type, place, and time period if applicable. Example: "The line graph illustrates changes in the consumption of three types of fast food by teenagers in Australia between 1975 and 2000."
  2. Overview / General Trend (1-2 sentences): Summarise the main trend(s), overall pattern, or most noticeable features visible in the data. Do NOT include specific numbers or details here. This is crucial for a high score. Example: "Overall, the consumption of pizza and hamburgers increased significantly, while fish and chips saw a considerable decline over the period."
  3. Body Paragraph(s) (2-3 paragraphs): Describe the specific details and key features. Group information logically (e.g., by time period, by category, by highest/lowest values). Support your points with data (numbers, percentages) from the visual. Make comparisons where relevant.
    • For trends (line graphs): Describe starting points, peaks, troughs, final points, overall increase/decrease.
    • For comparisons (bar/pie charts, tables): Compare categories, highlight highest/lowest values, significant differences or similarities.
    • For processes/diagrams: Describe each stage sequentially using appropriate sequencing language.
    • For maps: Describe changes between the two time periods (e.g., new buildings, relocated facilities, changes in land use).
  4. (Optional) Conclusion: A short concluding sentence can sometimes be added to reinforce the main overview, but it's often combined with the Overview paragraph and not strictly necessary if the Overview is strong. Avoid introducing new information or opinions.
Ensure you write at least 150 words.
