IELTS Speaking: Technology Questions & Answers (2026)

IELTS Speaking technology topic guide with Part 1, 2 & 3 model answers. Questions about phones, social media, AI, and digital life with Band 7+ vocabulary.

Part 1 Questions: Technology

These questions are asked at the start of the speaking test. Keep your answers to 2-3 sentences.

  • How often do you use technology?
  • What technology do you use most?
  • Do you think people rely too much on technology?
  • What was the last piece of technology you bought?
  • Do you prefer to communicate online or face to face?
  • How has technology changed your daily life?

Part 2 Cue Card

Describe a piece of technology that you find useful. You should say: what it is, when you got it, how often you use it, and explain why you find it useful.

Model Answer (Band 7+)

The piece of technology I find most useful is my noise-cancelling headphones, specifically a pair of Sony WH-1000XM5s that I purchased about a year ago. I realise this might seem like a mundane choice when I could talk about smartphones or laptops, but these headphones have genuinely transformed my daily life.

I use them virtually every day, typically for four to six hours. I wear them during my commute on the underground, while working in coffee shops, and when studying in the evening. The active noise cancellation is remarkable. It can reduce the roar of a train carriage to a gentle hum, which makes it possible to focus on a podcast or simply enjoy silence in an otherwise noisy environment.

What makes them particularly useful is the impact they have had on my productivity. Before I had noise-cancelling headphones, I found it extremely difficult to concentrate in public spaces. The constant background noise of conversations, traffic, and announcements was a persistent source of distraction. Now, I can effectively create a private workspace anywhere, which has been transformative for my study habits.

They have also improved my quality of life in less obvious ways. Long flights, which I used to find exhausting due to the constant engine noise, have become genuinely restful. I can arrive at my destination feeling significantly less fatigued. The headphones also have an ambient sound mode that allows you to hear announcements without removing them, which is surprisingly practical.

Examiner tip: This answer demonstrates fluency, range of vocabulary, and the ability to extend responses with specific details and personal reflection. Notice the use of linking phrases and the natural progression of ideas.

Part 3 Discussion Questions

These are more abstract questions that require deeper analysis. Aim for 3-5 sentences per answer.

  • How has technology affected education?
  • Do you think artificial intelligence will replace many jobs?
  • What are the negative effects of spending too much time online?
  • Should governments regulate technology companies more strictly?
