Example Discussion Areas & Questions

Part 3 questions are linked to the Part 2 topic. For example, if Part 2 was about a helpful person, Part 3 might explore helping others in society. Below are general types of questions you might encounter.

Comparing & Contrasting

Example Questions:

  • What are the differences between X and Y?
  • How has X changed compared to the past?
  • Do you think X is more important than Y? Why?
  • Compare the attitudes of young people and old people towards X.

Answering Tip: Use comparison language (e.g., whereas, while, compared to, more/less than, similarly, in contrast).

Giving Opinions & Reasons

Example Questions:

  • Do you think X is a positive or negative development?
  • Why do some people enjoy X?
  • What are the advantages/disadvantages of X?
  • In your opinion, should governments regulate X?

Answering Tip: Clearly state your opinion and provide 2-3 supporting reasons or examples. Use phrases like "In my view...", "I believe...", "One reason is...", "For example...".

Speculating about the Future

Example Questions:

  • How do you think X will change in the future?
  • What impact will Y have on society?
  • Do you think X will become more or less popular?
  • What developments related to X do you expect to see?

Answering Tip: Use future tenses and modal verbs (e.g., will likely, might, could, may). Use phrases like "It's possible that...", "I predict that...", "In the coming years...".

Analyzing Issues / Cause & Effect

Example Questions:

  • What are the main causes of problem X?
  • What are the effects of Y on individuals/society?
  • How can problem X be solved?
  • What qualities are needed to do X successfully?

Answering Tip: Discuss causes, effects, or solutions logically. Use linking words for cause/effect (e.g., because, due to, as a result, therefore, leads to).
