IELTS Speaking: Environment Questions & Answers (2026)

IELTS Speaking environment and nature topic guide. Part 1, 2 & 3 answers about climate change, pollution, recycling, and environmental issues with key vocabulary.

Part 1 Questions: Environment

These questions are asked at the start of the speaking test. Keep your answers to 2-3 sentences.

  • Do you care about the environment?
  • What do you do to help the environment?
  • Do you recycle?
  • Do you prefer spending time indoors or outdoors?
  • Has your area been affected by pollution?
  • What environmental issue concerns you most?

Part 2 Cue Card

Describe an environmental problem in your country. You should say: what the problem is, what causes it, how it affects people, and explain what could be done to solve it.

Model Answer (Band 7+)

One of the most pressing environmental problems in my country is air pollution, particularly in major urban centres. During winter months, many cities experience hazardous levels of particulate matter, creating a thick grey haze that reduces visibility and makes outdoor activities genuinely dangerous for vulnerable groups.

The causes are multifaceted. Industrial emissions from factories and power plants contribute significantly, as many still rely on coal for energy generation. Vehicle exhaust is another major factor, with the rapid increase in car ownership over the past two decades overwhelming the capacity of roads and creating perpetual congestion. Agricultural burning in surrounding rural areas compounds the problem seasonally.

The effects on daily life are profound. On the worst days, schools close, outdoor events are cancelled, and residents are advised to remain indoors with air purifiers running. The long-term health consequences are alarming. Studies have linked persistent exposure to fine particulate matter with increased rates of respiratory disease, cardiovascular problems, and even reduced cognitive function in children. Healthcare costs associated with air pollution run into billions annually.

Addressing this requires a comprehensive approach. Transitioning to renewable energy sources would reduce industrial emissions, while investing in public transport infrastructure could decrease the number of private vehicles on roads. Stricter emissions standards for vehicles and factories, combined with genuine enforcement rather than token penalties, would also help. Some cities have experimented with odd-even number plate schemes during peak pollution periods, which have shown promising short-term results.

Examiner tip: This answer demonstrates fluency, range of vocabulary, and the ability to extend responses with specific details and personal reflection. Notice the use of linking phrases and the natural progression of ideas.

Part 3 Discussion Questions

These are more abstract questions that require deeper analysis. Aim for 3-5 sentences per answer.

  • Whose responsibility is it to protect the environment?
  • Do you think individuals can make a difference to environmental problems?
  • Why do some people not care about environmental issues?
  • How can governments encourage people to be more environmentally friendly?
