IELTS Task 1 Mixed Charts & Diagrams: 6 Band 7-9 Answers

This page covers the less common but important Task 1 types: process diagrams, maps showing change over time, and questions combining two different chart types. These often appear in the IELTS exam and require different vocabulary and approaches.

Sample 1: Water Treatment Process

Band 8.0
Data: The diagram shows how drinking water is produced from river water through a 6-stage treatment process: intake, screening, coagulation/flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection.
Model Answer (173 words)

[Introduction] The diagram illustrates the process by which river water is transformed into safe drinking water through six sequential stages.

[Overview] Overall, the process involves progressively removing contaminants from raw water through a combination of physical and chemical treatments before it is delivered to consumers.

[Detail 1] Initially, water is drawn from the river through an intake pipe. It then passes through a screening stage where large debris such as leaves and stones are filtered out. Subsequently, chemicals are added during the coagulation and flocculation phase, causing small particles to clump together into larger masses called floc.

[Detail 2] The floc then settles to the bottom of sedimentation tanks, separating the solid waste from the clearer water above. Next, the water is passed through sand and gravel filters to remove any remaining fine particles. Finally, chlorine or ultraviolet light is applied for disinfection before the treated water is distributed to households.

Examiner Comments

Excellent use of passive voice throughout, which is appropriate for describing a man-made process. Clear sequencing language guides the reader through each stage. Technical vocabulary is used accurately. Overview identifies the overarching purpose. Band 8.

Key Vocabulary
  • is transformed into - is changed to become
  • progressively removing - gradually eliminating
  • passes through - goes through/via
  • settles to the bottom - sinks down
  • is distributed to - is delivered to

Sample 2: Town Centre Changes (1990 vs 2020)

Band 8.5
Data: Two maps show Millfield town centre in 1990 and 2020. Key changes: the factory (north-west) was replaced by a shopping centre; farmland (south) became a housing estate; the park was reduced in size; a new car park and cinema were added; the river bridge was widened.
Model Answer (178 words)

[Introduction] The two maps compare the layout of Millfield town centre in 1990 and 2020, revealing substantial urban development over the thirty-year period.

[Overview] Overall, the town underwent significant modernisation, with industrial and agricultural land being converted to commercial and residential use. The general character of the town shifted from semi-rural to distinctly suburban.

[Detail 1] The most notable change occurred in the north-west, where the former factory was demolished and replaced by a large shopping centre with an adjacent multi-storey car park. To the south, the extensive farmland was converted into a housing estate comprising approximately 200 homes. A new cinema was constructed near the town centre.

[Detail 2] The park, which previously occupied a large area in the east, was reduced in size to accommodate the new development. The bridge crossing the river in the centre was widened to handle increased traffic. The historic church and library in the centre remained unchanged.

Examiner Comments

Outstanding map description with clear spatial language and change vocabulary. The overview captures the overall transformation perfectly. Excellent use of passive voice for changes. All key changes are described with precise directional language. Band 8.5.

Key Vocabulary
  • underwent significant modernisation - experienced major development
  • was demolished and replaced by - was torn down and substituted with
  • was converted into - was changed to become
  • was reduced in size - became smaller
  • remained unchanged - stayed the same

Sample 3: Chocolate Production

Band 7.5
Data: The diagram shows how chocolate is produced from cacao beans through 8 stages: harvesting, fermenting, drying, roasting, winnowing (shell removal), grinding, pressing, and moulding.
Model Answer (168 words)

[Introduction] The diagram illustrates the eight-stage manufacturing process through which cacao beans are converted into finished chocolate products.

[Overview] Overall, the process begins with the agricultural harvesting of cacao pods and involves multiple processing stages that gradually transform the raw beans into the refined chocolate sold to consumers.

[Detail 1] The process commences when ripe cacao pods are harvested from trees and the beans are extracted. These beans are then fermented in covered containers for several days to develop flavour, after which they are spread out to dry in the sun. The dried beans are subsequently roasted at high temperatures.

[Detail 2] Following roasting, the outer shells are removed through a process called winnowing, leaving the inner nibs. These nibs are ground into a thick paste known as cocoa liquor. The liquor is then pressed to separate cocoa butter from cocoa solids. Finally, the components are recombined with sugar and poured into moulds to create the finished chocolate bars.

Examiner Comments

Good use of passive voice and sequencing language throughout. Each stage is clearly described with appropriate technical terms. The overview summarises the process well. Vocabulary for describing manufacturing processes is strong. Band 7.5.

Key Vocabulary
  • are converted into - are changed to
  • are extracted - are taken out
  • are subsequently roasted - are then heated
  • are ground into - are crushed to form
  • poured into moulds - put into shaped containers

Sample 4: Population Growth (Bar) & Birth Rate (Line)

Band 8.0
Data: A bar chart shows population (millions) in Country Y for 1980, 2000, and 2020 (25m, 38m, 52m). A line graph shows the birth rate per 1000 people over the same period (35, 22, 14).
Model Answer (170 words)

[Introduction] The bar chart and line graph present the population size and birth rate of Country Y over a 40-year period from 1980 to 2020.

[Overview] Overall, the two visuals reveal an inverse relationship: the population more than doubled while the birth rate fell by more than half, suggesting that population growth was driven by increased life expectancy rather than births.

[Detail 1] The population grew steadily from 25 million in 1980 to 38 million in 2000, before accelerating to reach 52 million by 2020. The total increase over the period was approximately 108%, with the most rapid growth occurring in the final two decades.

[Detail 2] In contrast, the birth rate declined consistently from 35 per thousand in 1980 to 22 in 2000, and then continued its downward trend to just 14 per thousand by 2020. This 60% reduction indicates a demographic transition typical of developing nations.

Examiner Comments

Impressive ability to identify and articulate the inverse relationship between the two charts. Data from both visuals is integrated effectively. The demographic transition inference shows excellent analytical skill. Strong vocabulary for trends. Band 8.

Key Vocabulary
  • inverse relationship - opposite trend
  • fell by more than half - decreased over 50%
  • accelerating - growing faster
  • declined consistently - dropped steadily
  • demographic transition - population pattern shift

Sample 5: Island Development (Before & After Tourism)

Band 7.0
Data: Maps show a small tropical island before and after tourist development. Before: beach (west), forest (centre/east), small fishing village (south). After: hotel complex (west beach), golf course (replacing forest in centre), marina (south replacing village), airport runway (east), roads connecting all facilities.
Model Answer (162 words)

[Introduction] The two maps show a tropical island before and after it was developed for tourism.

[Overview] Overall, the island was transformed from a largely natural environment with a small fishing community into a fully developed tourist resort with modern facilities.

[Detail 1] The most visible change is on the western coast, where the natural beach was developed into a hotel complex with swimming pools. In the centre, the forest was cleared to make way for a golf course covering a large area. These two developments occupy the majority of the island's land.

[Detail 2] To the south, the small fishing village was replaced by a modern marina for yachts and boats. In the east, an airport runway was constructed on previously undeveloped land. A network of roads was built connecting all the new facilities across the island.

Examiner Comments

Clear description of changes using appropriate spatial language. Good use of passive voice for developments. The overview effectively summarises the nature of the transformation. Vocabulary is adequate though could be more varied for a higher band. Band 7.

Key Vocabulary
  • was transformed from... into - was changed from... to
  • was developed into - was built up to become
  • was cleared to make way for - was removed to create space for
  • was replaced by - was substituted with
  • was constructed - was built

Sample 6: Recycling Rates (Pie) & Waste Volume (Table)

Band 7.5
Data: A pie chart shows recycling rates in 2022: paper 35%, plastic 15%, glass 25%, metal 20%, other 5%. A table shows total waste generated (million tonnes): 2010: 45, 2015: 52, 2020: 48, 2022: 50.
Model Answer (165 words)

[Introduction] The pie chart shows the breakdown of materials recycled in 2022, while the table tracks total waste generation from 2010 to 2022.

[Overview] Overall, paper and glass together accounted for the majority of recycled materials, while total waste volumes fluctuated over the twelve-year period without a clear long-term trend.

[Detail 1] Paper represented the largest share of recycled materials at 35%, followed by glass at 25% and metal at 20%. Plastic, despite being a major environmental concern, comprised only 15% of recycled materials, while other materials accounted for a negligible 5%.

[Detail 2] Regarding total waste volumes, generation rose from 45 to 52 million tonnes between 2010 and 2015, before declining to 48 million in 2020, possibly reflecting pandemic-related reductions. By 2022, waste had partially recovered to 50 million tonnes, remaining below the 2015 peak.

Examiner Comments
