CLB 6 IELTS Score: Requirements and Immigration Programs
CLB 6 sits one level below the Express Entry Federal Skilled Worker minimum, but it opens doors to several Provincial Nominee Programs and other immigration pathways. Here is everything you need to know about achieving and using a CLB 6 score.
What Does CLB 6 Mean?
Canadian Language Benchmark 6 represents an upper-intermediate level of English proficiency, corresponding approximately to CEFR B1+ to B2. At this level, you can communicate effectively in most everyday and workplace situations.
At CLB 6, a person can:
- Follow extended speech and complex arguments on familiar topics, even when the speech is not clearly structured
- Read articles and reports concerned with contemporary problems in which the writers adopt particular stances
- Write clear, detailed text on subjects related to personal interests and explain a viewpoint with supporting arguments
- Interact with a degree of fluency that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible
- Give clear descriptions on a wide range of subjects related to personal and professional fields
CLB 6 demonstrates solid functional English. While it falls just short of the FSW Express Entry minimum, it is sufficient for many other immigration pathways and shows employers you can communicate effectively in a Canadian workplace.

How to Achieve CLB 6: Study Tips
Listening (Target: 5.5)
- Practice with varied accents: IELTS uses British, Australian, North American, and other English accents. Listen to podcasts and news from different countries
- Focus on Section 3 and 4: These academic sections are where most marks are lost at the 5.5 level
- Prediction skills: Before each recording plays, read the questions and predict what type of answer is needed
- Spelling matters: At this level, spelling errors on Listening answers cost you marks. Practise writing common words correctly
Reading (Target: 5.0)
- Time management is critical: You have 60 minutes for 40 questions. Aim for 20 minutes per section maximum
- Practise skimming and scanning: You do not need to read every word. Find key information quickly
- True/False/Not Given: This question type is the most common source of errors. Practise distinguishing "False" from "Not Given"
- Build reading stamina: Read English articles daily for 30 minutes to increase speed and comprehension
Writing (Target: 5.5)
- Task 1 - Letter writing: Know the difference between formal, semi-formal, and informal tone. Match your language to the situation
- Task 2 - Essay structure: Use a clear 4-paragraph structure. Each body paragraph needs a topic sentence, explanation, and example
- Grammatical range: Use a mix of simple and complex sentences. Try conditionals, relative clauses, and passive voice
- Word count: Task 1 minimum 150 words, Task 2 minimum 250 words. Aim for 170 and 280 respectively
Speaking (Target: 5.5)
- Part 2 preparation: Practise 2-minute monologues on common topics. Time yourself and aim to speak for the full 2 minutes
- Use discourse markers: Well, actually, to be honest, the thing is, what I mean is
- Self-correction shows awareness: If you make a grammar mistake and correct it, examiners note this positively
- Develop opinions: For Part 3, practise giving and justifying opinions on abstract topics
CLB 6 vs CLB 7: The Critical Gap
The difference between CLB 6 and CLB 7 is arguably the most important gap in Canadian immigration. Here is why:
CLB 6 (Current Level)
- 36 CRS points (single)
- Cannot apply for FSW
- Limited PNP options
- Below most competitive draws
CLB 7 (Target)
- 68 CRS points (single) - nearly double
- Qualifies for all Express Entry programs
- Opens all PNP streams
- Competitive for many draws
The IELTS score difference is just 0.5 bands per skill (5.5 to 6.0 in L/W/S, and 5.0 to 6.0 in Reading). With targeted preparation, this is highly achievable within 2-3 months.
