How to Achieve CLB 8: Targeted Strategies

Listening (Target: 7.5 - The Key Challenge)

This is the skill that defines CLB 8. You need 32-34 correct out of 40, meaning you can only miss 6-8 questions:

  • Section 1 and 2 perfection: These sections should yield near-perfect scores. Practise until you consistently get 19-20 out of 20 on the first two sections
  • Section 3 mastery: Academic discussions between 2-3 speakers. Focus on following the thread of argument and who says what
  • Section 4 lectures: Practise with university lectures. TED Talks and Coursera lectures are excellent free resources
  • Speed of speech: At 7.5, you must handle fast, natural speech. Listen to podcasts at 1.25x speed to train your ear
  • Multiple choice in Section 3: These questions often have distractors that sound correct initially. Listen for the speaker's final conclusion, not their first thought
  • Map and plan questions: Practise spatial listening. Follow directions and descriptions of layouts precisely

Reading (Target: 6.5)

  • Speed is essential: At 6.5, you need to answer all 40 questions correctly enough, which means efficient time management
  • Matching features: These questions test your ability to scan for specific information. Practise locating names, dates, and concepts quickly
  • Summary completion: Read the summary first to understand the topic, then locate the relevant section in the passage
  • Vocabulary development: At this level, you need to understand paraphrasing. The question will use different words from the passage

Writing (Target: 6.5)

  • Task 2 takes priority: Task 2 is worth twice as much as Task 1. Spend 40 minutes on Task 2 and 20 on Task 1
  • Band 7 vocabulary: Use less common vocabulary naturally. Instead of "good" use "beneficial/advantageous"; instead of "bad" use "detrimental/adverse"
  • Complex grammar: Include conditional sentences, passive constructions, and relative clauses. Aim for 3-4 complex structures per paragraph
  • Develop your arguments: Each body paragraph needs: topic sentence + explanation + specific example + linking back to thesis

Speaking (Target: 6.5)

  • Lexical resource: Use topic-specific vocabulary, idioms, and collocations naturally. Do not force them - use them where they fit
  • Part 3 depth: Give multi-layered answers. Compare, contrast, give advantages and disadvantages, and consider different perspectives
  • Pronunciation features: Use word stress, sentence stress, and intonation patterns to convey meaning. Flat delivery is penalised
  • Self-correction: If you make a grammar error, correct it naturally. This demonstrates language awareness

CLB 8 vs CLB 9: Is It Worth Pushing Higher?

CLB 8 (Current Target)

  • 92 CRS points (single)
  • Listening 7.5 is the challenge
  • Good for mid-range CRS scores
  • Achievable in 2-4 months from CLB 7

CLB 9 (Next Level)

  • 124 CRS points - 32 more than CLB 8
  • L 8.0, R 7.0, W 7.0, S 7.0
  • Competitive for most Express Entry draws
  • Requires additional 2-4 months focused study

The jump from CLB 8 to CLB 9 is worth 32 extra CRS points. If your overall CRS is in the 440-480 range, those 32 points could move you above the cut-off. The investment in 2-4 months of additional study is almost always worthwhile.

Practical Tips

  • One Skill Retake for Listening: If you score 6.5 in R/W/S but only 7.0 in Listening, consider retaking just Listening to reach 7.5
  • Score validity: 2 years from test date for IRCC
  • Computer-delivered IELTS: Many candidates find Listening easier on computer as you can adjust volume and use headphones
  • Test frequency: You can take IELTS as often as every week if needed. Some candidates take it 3-5 times to maximise their CLB level
