CLB 10 IELTS Score: The Maximum Language Points

CLB 10 is the highest level that earns CRS points in the Express Entry system. It represents near-native English proficiency and gives you the absolute maximum language contribution to your CRS score. But is it worth targeting? This guide provides an honest analysis.

Quick Reference: CLB 10 = IELTS General Training L 8.5 | R 8.0 | W 7.5 | S 7.5

CLB 10 IELTS Score Requirements

IELTS SkillCLB 9CLB 10 (This Page)Jump RequiredDifficulty
Listening8.08.5+0.5Hard - only 1-2 errors allowed
Reading7.08.0+1.0Very hard - near-perfect accuracy
Writing7.07.5+0.5Extremely hard - top 5% globally
Speaking7.07.5+0.5Hard - requires sophisticated language
The Reading Challenge: CLB 10 Reading requires IELTS 8.0, which is a full band higher than CLB 9. On the General Training test, this means correctly answering 35-36 out of 40 questions. The jump from 7.0 to 8.0 in GT Reading is one of the hardest improvements in IELTS.

CRS Points: CLB 10 vs CLB 9

CLB LevelPer Skill (Single)Total (Single)Total (Married)Difference
CLB 7176864-
CLB 8239288+24
CLB 931124116+32
CLB 10+34136128+12
Diminishing Returns: CLB 9 to CLB 10 gives only 12 extra CRS points. Compare this to CLB 8 to CLB 9 which gives 32 points. The effort-to-reward ratio at CLB 10 is poor unless you are already scoring close to it naturally.

Should You Target CLB 10?

Here is an honest assessment of when CLB 10 makes sense and when it does not:

Target CLB 10 If:

  • You already score CLB 9 comfortably with room to spare
  • English is your first language or near-native level
  • You need every possible CRS point and are close to the draw cut-off
  • You have lived and worked in an English-speaking country for years
  • Your other CRS factors are already maximised

Stick with CLB 9 If:

  • You are currently scoring at CLB 7 or 8
  • Writing is your weakest skill (7.5 is extremely hard to achieve)
  • You have room to improve other CRS factors (age, education, experience)
  • You are on a time constraint for your Express Entry profile
  • The 12 extra points will not change your CRS outcome

How to Achieve CLB 10: Expert Strategies

At CLB 10 level, traditional IELTS test preparation techniques have diminishing returns. You need genuine advanced English proficiency:

Listening (Target: 8.5 = 37-38 correct out of 40)

  • Near-perfect accuracy required: You can miss only 2-3 questions out of 40. Every section must be almost flawless
  • Total English immersion: Switch all entertainment, news, and professional communication to English
  • Academic content daily: Listen to university lectures, scientific podcasts (e.g., Radiolab, Hidden Brain), and documentary narrations
  • Distraction training: Practise listening in non-ideal conditions (background noise, fast speakers) to build resilience
  • Note-taking excellence: Develop shorthand systems for rapid note-taking while listening

Reading (Target: 8.0 = 35-36 correct out of 40)

  • Read extensively and critically: The Economist, The Atlantic, Nature, and academic journals build the reading level needed for 8.0
  • Speed and accuracy simultaneously: At 8.0, you need to finish all sections with time to review, meaning 250+ wpm reading speed with high comprehension
  • Inference skills: 8.0 requires understanding implied meaning, author intention, and textual nuance beyond literal comprehension
  • Perfect Section 1: Lose zero marks in Section 1 (survival English). All your margin for error is in Sections 2-3
  • Practice with Academic Reading: Even though you take GT, practise with Academic passages to increase your ceiling

Writing (Target: 7.5 - The Rarest Achievement)

  • Band 7.5 Writing profile: Virtually all sentences are error-free. Vocabulary is sophisticated and precisely used. Arguments are fully developed with nuance
  • Write daily: Produce at least 500 words of analytical English daily. Keep a journal, write opinion pieces, draft business emails
  • Get expert feedback: At this level, self-assessment is unreliable. Pay for professional IELTS examiner feedback on your writing
  • Study Band 8-9 sample essays: Analyse what makes top-scoring essays exceptional. Note the vocabulary precision, sentence variety, and argument sophistication
  • Master all essay types: Discussion, opinion, problem-solution, advantages-disadvantages, two-part questions. Each has its own optimal structure

Speaking (Target: 7.5)

  • Idiomatic fluency: Use idioms, phrasal verbs, and collocations naturally and appropriately. Not forced or memorised, but as part of natural expression
  • Topic flexibility: At 7.5, you need to discuss any topic with sophistication. Practise talking about technology, environment, education, society, economics, and culture
  • Pronunciation refinement: Focus on connected speech features: linking, weak forms, elision. Natural rhythm and stress patterns are essential
  • Discourse management: Structure your answers logically even in spontaneous speech. Use topic sentences, supporting points, and conclusions naturally

The Mixed CLB Strategy

Remember that IRCC assesses each skill independently. You do not need CLB 10 in all four skills to benefit. Consider these realistic combinations:

ScenarioListeningReadingWritingSpeakingTotal CRS
Pure CLB 9CLB 9 (31)CLB 9 (31)CLB 9 (31)CLB 9 (31)124
Mixed (L10, rest 9)CLB 10 (34)CLB 9 (31)CLB 9 (31)CLB 9 (31)127
Mixed (L10, S10, rest 9)CLB 10 (34)CLB 9 (31)CLB 9 (31)CLB 10 (34)130
Pure CLB 10CLB 10 (34)CLB 10 (34)CLB 10 (34)CLB 10 (34)136

Getting CLB 10 in Listening (8.5) and Speaking (7.5) while keeping CLB 9 in Reading and Writing gives you 130 points - 6 more than pure CLB 9 with much less difficulty than achieving CLB 10 across the board.

Practical Tips for CLB 10 Candidates

  • One Skill Retake: If you achieve CLB 10 in three skills but miss one, retake that single skill
  • Computer-delivered IELTS: Strongly recommended at this level. Typing is faster than handwriting for Writing, and headphone audio quality helps Listening
  • Multiple test bookings: Book 2-3 tests spread 3-4 weeks apart. This gives you multiple chances to hit peak performance
  • Test day performance: At CLB 10, the difference between your best and worst days matters enormously. Ensure good sleep, arrive early, and manage anxiety
  • Score validity: 2 years from test date. Start early so you have time for retakes
