How IELTS Band Scores Are Calculated

Your IELTS overall band score is the average of your four individual skill scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), rounded to the nearest whole or half band. Understanding the calculation and rounding rules is essential for predicting your result and setting realistic targets.

The Averaging Process

IELTS adds your four skill band scores together, divides by 4, then applies specific rounding rules:

Average DecimalRounded ToExample ScoresAverageOverall Band
.00 to .24Rounds down to .0L7.0, R6.5, W6.0, S6.56.506.5
.25 to .74Rounds to .5L7.0, R7.0, W6.0, S6.06.506.5
.75 to .99Rounds up to next .0L7.0, R7.0, W6.5, S6.56.757.0
Critical Rounding Example: If your scores are L7.0, R7.0, W6.0, S7.0, your average is 6.75 which rounds UP to 7.0. But if your scores are L7.0, R6.5, W6.0, S7.0, your average is 6.625 which rounds to 6.5. That 0.5 difference in Reading cost you a full half band overall.

Listening and Reading: Raw Score Conversion

Listening and Reading are scored from your raw number of correct answers out of 40 questions. The conversion from raw scores to band scores is set by IELTS and varies slightly between test versions, but the tables on this page represent the standard published conversions.

Writing and Speaking: Examiner Assessment

Writing and Speaking are assessed by trained IELTS examiners using detailed band descriptors across four criteria each:

Writing Assessment Criteria

  1. Task Achievement/Response (25%) - Did you fully address the task?
  2. Coherence and Cohesion (25%) - Is your essay logically organised?
  3. Lexical Resource (25%) - Range and accuracy of vocabulary
  4. Grammatical Range and Accuracy (25%) - Variety and correctness of grammar

Speaking Assessment Criteria

  1. Fluency and Coherence (25%) - Speaking without hesitation, logical flow
  2. Lexical Resource (25%) - Vocabulary range and appropriateness
  3. Grammatical Range and Accuracy (25%) - Sentence structures and correctness
  4. Pronunciation (25%) - Clarity, stress, rhythm, intonation

Frequently Asked Questions About IELTS Band Scores

Your overall IELTS band score is the average of your four individual skill scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), rounded to the nearest whole or half band. The rules: .00-.24 rounds down, .25-.74 rounds to .5, .75-.99 rounds up. Example: L7.0 + R6.5 + W6.0 + S7.0 = 26.5 / 4 = 6.625, which rounds to 6.5.

You need 30-31 correct answers out of 40 for Band 7.0 in IELTS Listening (both Academic and General Training).

No. You get 1 mark per correct answer and 0 for incorrect or blank answers. Always attempt every question.

GT passages are easier, so you need more correct answers for the same band. Band 7.0 in Academic needs 30-32 correct; GT needs 34-35.

Yes. IELTS reports all scores in whole and half bands (5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 6.5, etc.) for all skills and the overall score.

Count correct answers for Listening and Reading using the conversion tables above. Writing and Speaking are harder to estimate as they depend on examiner assessment across four criteria each.

Most require 6.0-6.5 for undergraduate and 6.5-7.0 for postgraduate, with minimum individual bands of 5.5-6.5. Top universities require 7.0-7.5 overall.

The published tables are standardised and consistent. Individual test versions may vary in difficulty, which IELTS accounts for through statistical equating.
