How IELTS Band Scores Are Calculated
Your IELTS overall band score is the average of your four individual skill scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), rounded to the nearest whole or half band. Understanding the calculation and rounding rules is essential for predicting your result and setting realistic targets.
The Averaging Process
IELTS adds your four skill band scores together, divides by 4, then applies specific rounding rules:
| Average Decimal | Rounded To | Example Scores | Average | Overall Band |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| .00 to .24 | Rounds down to .0 | L7.0, R6.5, W6.0, S6.5 | 6.50 | 6.5 |
| .25 to .74 | Rounds to .5 | L7.0, R7.0, W6.0, S6.0 | 6.50 | 6.5 |
| .75 to .99 | Rounds up to next .0 | L7.0, R7.0, W6.5, S6.5 | 6.75 | 7.0 |
Listening and Reading: Raw Score Conversion
Listening and Reading are scored from your raw number of correct answers out of 40 questions. The conversion from raw scores to band scores is set by IELTS and varies slightly between test versions, but the tables on this page represent the standard published conversions.
- Each correct answer = 1 mark. There is no negative marking for wrong answers, so always guess if unsure.
- Spelling matters in Listening and Reading. Incorrect spelling = wrong answer, even if the word sounds right.
- General Training Reading has a different conversion table than Academic Reading because the passages are easier, so you need more correct answers for the same band.
Writing and Speaking: Examiner Assessment
Writing and Speaking are assessed by trained IELTS examiners using detailed band descriptors across four criteria each:
Writing Assessment Criteria
- Task Achievement/Response (25%) - Did you fully address the task?
- Coherence and Cohesion (25%) - Is your essay logically organised?
- Lexical Resource (25%) - Range and accuracy of vocabulary
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy (25%) - Variety and correctness of grammar
Speaking Assessment Criteria
- Fluency and Coherence (25%) - Speaking without hesitation, logical flow
- Lexical Resource (25%) - Vocabulary range and appropriateness
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy (25%) - Sentence structures and correctness
- Pronunciation (25%) - Clarity, stress, rhythm, intonation
Band Score Descriptors: What Each Level Means
IELTS uses a 9-band scale where each band corresponds to a level of English competence:
| Band | Skill Level | Description | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9 | Expert User | Full command of the language. Appropriate, accurate, and fluent with complete understanding. | Native-level roles; top academic programmes |
| 8 | Very Good User | Fully operational command with occasional inaccuracies. Handles complex arguments well. | Competitive universities; professional registration |
| 7 | Good User | Operational command with occasional inaccuracies. Handles complex language reasonably well. | Most university admissions; Canada FSW; UK nursing |
| 6.5 | Competent+ User | Generally effective command despite some inaccuracies and misunderstandings. | Standard university requirement; many immigration programmes |
| 6 | Competent User | Effective command despite inaccuracies. Can use and understand fairly complex language. | Foundation programmes; Australia points test minimum |
| 5.5 | Modest+ User | Partial command. Copes with overall meaning in most situations. | UK Skilled Worker visa (some roles); pre-sessional |
| 5 | Modest User | Partial command. Can handle basic communication in own field. | UK spouse visa; some vocational programmes |
| 4 | Limited User | Basic competence limited to familiar situations. | UK visitor route; basic entry-level positions |
