The 5 IELTS Essay Types

Every IELTS Writing Task 2 question falls into one of five types. Recognising the type is the first step to structuring your essay correctly.

1. Opinion / Agree-Disagree

Key phrases: “To what extent do you agree or disagree?” / “Do you agree or disagree?”

Structure:

  1. Introduction — paraphrase + clear opinion
  2. Body 1 — Main reason supporting your view
  3. Body 2 — Second reason or counterargument + rebuttal
  4. Conclusion — Restate opinion

2. Discussion (Both Views)

Key phrases: “Discuss both views and give your opinion.”

Structure:

  1. Introduction — paraphrase + state you will discuss both
  2. Body 1 — View A with reasons/examples
  3. Body 2 — View B with reasons/examples
  4. Conclusion — Your opinion + why

3. Problem-Solution

Key phrases: “What are the causes/problems? What solutions can you suggest?”

Structure:

  1. Introduction — paraphrase the issue
  2. Body 1 — Problems/causes (2–3)
  3. Body 2 — Solutions (2–3)
  4. Conclusion — Summary + recommendation

4. Advantages-Disadvantages

Key phrases: “What are the advantages and disadvantages?” / “Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?”

Structure:

  1. Introduction — paraphrase topic
  2. Body 1 — Advantages (2–3)
  3. Body 2 — Disadvantages (2–3)
  4. Conclusion — Your overall assessment

5. Two-Part Question

Key phrases: Two separate questions about the same topic.

Top Tips for IELTS Writing Task 2

  • Spend 5 minutes planning — outline your ideas before writing
  • Write 250–280 words — going significantly over wastes time
  • Use topic-specific vocabulary — see our vocabulary list
  • Include examples — support every argument with an example
  • Use linking words naturally — do not overload your essay with connectors
  • Answer the question fully — address every part of the prompt
  • Proofread for 2–3 minutes — check grammar, spelling and coherence
