IELTS Band 7 in 30 Days: The Intensive Study Plan
This is a structured, day-by-day plan designed for test-takers who need to reach Band 7 within one month. It requires 4-5 hours of focused study daily and is best suited for those currently scoring 6.0-6.5. If you are serious about hitting 7.0, follow this plan exactly.
What Band 7 Actually Requires
Before diving into the plan, understand exactly what IELTS Band 7 means in each skill:
| Skill | Band 7 Means | Approximate Raw Score |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | Understands extended speech even when not clearly structured | 30-32 correct out of 40 |
| Reading | Reads and understands detailed argumentative texts | 30-32 correct out of 40 (Academic) |
| Writing | Clear, detailed writing with good organisation and vocabulary range | Band descriptors (see below) |
| Speaking | Speaks at length with detail, uses flexible vocabulary, mostly accurate grammar | Band descriptors (see below) |
The 30-Day Plan: Week by Week
Week 1 (Days 1-7): Assessment and Foundation
Goal: Identify weaknesses, build core strategies, establish study routine.
Day 1: Diagnostic Test (5 hours)
- Take a full IELTS practice test under exam conditions (2 hours 45 minutes)
- Score yourself honestly. Note exact scores in each skill
- Identify your weakest skill - this is your priority for the next 30 days
- Create a study log: track daily study hours, areas covered, and progress
Days 2-3: Listening Foundation (4 hours/day)
- Morning (2 hrs): Complete 2 full Listening practice tests. Analyse every error - categorise as: vocabulary gap, spelling error, missed signal word, or comprehension failure
- Afternoon (1 hr): Listen to 3 TED Talks (12-18 mins each) and summarise the main points in writing
- Evening (1 hr): Vocabulary building - learn 15 new academic words with collocations and example sentences
Days 4-5: Reading Foundation (4 hours/day)
- Morning (2 hrs): Complete 2 full Reading tests (timed at 20 mins per passage). Review every wrong answer
- Afternoon (1 hr): Practise True/False/Not Given and Matching Headings - the two most common high-scoring question types
- Evening (1 hr): Read one long-form article (The Guardian, BBC, or The Economist) and note 10 new vocabulary items
Days 6-7: Writing and Speaking Foundation (4 hours/day)
- Morning (2 hrs): Write 1 Task 2 essay (40 mins timed) + 1 Task 1 response (20 mins timed). Then self-assess against band descriptors
- Afternoon (1 hr): Speaking practice - record yourself answering 5 Part 1 questions, 1 Part 2 cue card, and 3 Part 3 questions. Listen back critically
- Evening (1 hr): Study Band 7 sample essays. Note vocabulary, structure, and argument development techniques
Week 2 (Days 8-14): Skill Development
Goal: Develop specific techniques for each skill. Target weak areas identified in Week 1.
Daily Schedule (Days 8-14) (4-5 hours/day)
- Morning session (2 hrs): Alternate between Listening and Reading practice tests. Always timed, always reviewed
- Midday (1 hr): Writing practice - 3 Task 2 essays per week, 2 Task 1 responses per week. Use the Essay Structure Template below
- Afternoon (1 hr): Speaking practice - find a speaking partner (online or in person). Practise full mock speaking tests
- Evening (30-60 mins): Vocabulary review + new words. Target: 10-13 new words daily
Week 3 (Days 15-21): Intensive Practice
Goal: Increase speed and accuracy. Focus heavily on your weakest skill.
Daily Schedule (Days 15-21) (5 hours/day)
- Morning (2.5 hrs): Full practice test section (rotate: Monday=Listening, Tuesday=Reading, Wednesday=Writing, Thursday=Speaking mock, Friday=Listening, Saturday=Reading, Sunday=Review)
- Afternoon (1.5 hrs): Targeted practice on your weakest question types. If Reading is weak, do 3 passages focusing on T/F/NG and Matching only
- Evening (1 hr): Vocabulary consolidation + grammar exercises targeting your writing weaknesses
Week 4 (Days 22-30): Exam Simulation and Refinement
Goal: Simulate exam conditions. Build confidence and stamina. Peak performance on test day.
Days 22-23: Full Practice Tests
- Take 2 complete practice tests on consecutive days under strict exam conditions
- Time every section precisely. No breaks between sections that are not allowed in the real test
- Review all errors and categorise them
Days 24-27: Targeted Weak Points
- Focus 80% of your time on your weakest 1-2 skills
- For Writing: write 1 essay daily and review against Band 7 criteria
- For Speaking: record 2 full mock tests and analyse fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation
- For Listening/Reading: do timed section practice (individual sections, not full tests)
Days 28-29: Light Review
- Do NOT take a full practice test. You need mental freshness for the exam
- Review vocabulary lists (30 mins)
- Read through your error logs - remind yourself of common mistakes to avoid
- Do one light Listening section and one Reading passage (30 mins total)
- Prepare your exam day logistics: ID, pencils, water, route to test centre
Day 30: TEST DAY
- Get 7-8 hours of sleep the night before
- Eat a light breakfast. Arrive at the test centre 30 minutes early
- Trust your preparation. Do not try to cram on the morning of the test
- During the test: read every question carefully, manage your time, and stay calm
Band 7 Writing: The Essay Formula
Writing is the hardest skill to improve quickly. Use this structure for every Task 2 essay:
Paragraph 1: Introduction (40-50 words)
Sentence 1: Paraphrase the question topic
Sentence 2: State your position/thesis clearly
Paragraph 2: Body 1 (80-100 words)
Topic sentence + Explanation + Specific example + Link back to thesis
Paragraph 3: Body 2 (80-100 words)
Topic sentence + Explanation + Specific example + Link back to thesis
Paragraph 4: Conclusion (30-40 words)
Summarise main points + Restate position (using different words)
Band 7 checklist: Clear position throughout, developed arguments with examples, range of vocabulary (avoid repetition), mix of complex and simple sentences, mostly accurate grammar, logical paragraphing.
Quick Wins: Fastest Improvements by Skill
Listening (Fastest to Improve)
- Read questions BEFORE audio plays
- Predict answer types (number, name, noun, verb)
- Listen for signal words (however, actually, in fact)
- Practise spelling of common words
- Use the 10-min transfer time wisely
Reading (Quick Strategy Gains)
- Skim passage first (2 minutes) before questions
- Do easiest questions first in each passage
- Never leave blanks - always guess
- For T/F/NG: find the exact sentence, compare word by word
- Time management: 20 mins max per passage
Writing (Hardest to Improve)
- Learn 5-6 essay structures cold
- Memorise 30 high-scoring linking phrases
- Use 3-4 less common vocabulary words per paragraph
- Include 2-3 complex grammar structures per essay
- Always plan for 5 minutes before writing
Speaking (Moderate Improvement Speed)
- Extend every answer with reasons and examples
- Learn topic-specific vocabulary for 10 common themes
- Use discourse markers naturally (well, actually, interestingly)
- Practise Part 2 with a timer - fill the full 2 minutes
- For Part 3: give balanced answers (some people think X, others believe Y)

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Studying passively: Reading about IELTS strategies without practising them. Every study session should include active practice
- Only doing practice tests: Tests diagnose problems but do not fix them. You need targeted practice on specific question types and skills
- Ignoring Writing: Writing is the lowest-scoring skill globally. If you avoid practising it, it will hold you back
- Memorising essays: Examiners recognise memorised answers and penalise them. Learn structures and vocabulary, not scripts
- Cramming the night before: Your brain needs rest to perform well. Stop studying by 6pm the day before the test
- Not simulating exam conditions: If you always practise in comfortable conditions with no time pressure, the real exam will shock you
