IELTS Band Scores Explained 2026

Everything you need to know about the IELTS scoring system: what each band level means, how scores are calculated, requirements by country, and a free band score calculator.

The IELTS test uses a 9-band scoring system to measure English language proficiency. Each band corresponds to a level of competence, from Band 1 (non-user) to Band 9 (expert user). Your overall band score is the average of four individual skill scores: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

How Overall Score is Calculated

The overall band score is the average of all four skills, rounded to the nearest half band:

  • Average ending in .25 rounds UP to next .5 (e.g., 6.25 → 6.5)
  • Average ending in .75 rounds UP to next whole (e.g., 6.75 → 7.0)
  • Average ending in .125 rounds DOWN to nearest (e.g., 6.125 → 6.0)

Important Note

These raw score to band score conversions are approximate. Exact conversion varies slightly between test versions, as IELTS adjusts for difficulty. The ranges above reflect the most commonly reported conversions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your overall band score is the average of your four skills, rounded to the nearest whole or half band. For example: L 7.0 + R 6.5 + W 6.0 + S 7.0 = 26.5 / 4 = 6.625, which rounds up to 6.5. The rounding rule: .25 rounds up to .5, .75 rounds up to the next whole number.

Listening and Speaking are scored identically. The difference is in Reading: Academic passages are more complex (journal articles, research papers), while General Training uses everyday material (advertisements, notices, workplace documents). General Training Reading has a different raw-score-to-band conversion that is slightly less generous at higher bands. Writing Task 1 differs in format (Academic = data/graph description, General = letter) but both use the same 0-9 band descriptors.

IELTS scores are valid for 2 years from the test date. After 2 years, most organisations and immigration authorities will not accept the results. Plan your test timing accordingly, especially for immigration applications where processing may take several months.

Yes! The IELTS One Skill Retake feature lets you retake just one section (Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking) instead of the full test. It is available for computer-delivered IELTS and must be completed within 60 days of the original test. This is ideal if one skill score is holding down your overall band.

Globally, the average IELTS Academic score is approximately 6.0 overall. Writing tends to be the lowest-scoring skill (global average around 5.5), while Reading and Listening averages are typically higher (around 6.0-6.5). These averages vary by test-taker nationality and purpose of the test.
